Australia have gone down to Switzerland in the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup, ending their hopes of reaching back to back finals for the first time in 41 years.

In the first match of the tie, Switzerland's Jil Teichmann got her nation off to a tremendous start, as she raced away to a 6-0, 3-0 lead over Storm Sanders.

The Aussie fought back, getting the second set back on serve, but eventually succumbed to the world no. 39 0-6, 3-6.

“I tried so hard out there,” Sanders told Tennis Australia after the match.

“I was trying to get the crowd involved and to enjoy the experience, even though I was getting absolutely smashed out there in the beginning. I just wanted to enjoy it and embrace it.”

In the second rubber, World no. 17 and Olympic Games gold medallist Belinda Bencic claimed victory for Switzerland, taking down Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3 6-2 in a very impressive performance.

Bencic whipped 18 winners past Tomljanovic, continuing her outstanding unbeaten run in Prague this week.

The win for Switzerland ends Australia's hopes of reaching back to back finals, for the first time in 41 years.
