After spending almost 12 months on the sidelines, Daria Gavrilova returned to grand slam action with an outstanding win on day one of Roland Garros.
The world no.788 caused a shock upset on Court 10, knocking out 24th seed Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 10 minutes, overnight. The 26 year old hit just 16 unforced errors in a tidy, consistent performance to claim her first grand slam victory since the 2018 US Open.
Gavrilova will take on Canadian wildcard Eugenie Bouchard in the second round.

Aussie lucky loser Astra Sharma took advantage of her lucky loser entry, advancing to the second round and claiming her first main draw victory at Roland Garros with a gutsy 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over Russian Anna Blinkova.
In the second round, Sharma will face 27th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who was too strong for Aussie Maddison Inglis, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
20th seed Maria Sakkari was too strong for Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, claiming a 6-0, 7-5 victory in one hour and 16 minutes out on Court 14.

On the men's side, both Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson crashed out of the tournament at the first hurdle.
25th seed Alex de Minaur suffered a straight sets defeat, going down to qualifier and former semifinalist Marco Cecchinato 6-7(9), 4-6, 0-6 in two hours and 51 minutes on Court 9.

Struggling with the heavy conditions, the top ranked Aussie male dropped the final eight games of the match after being broken at 4-4 in the second set, in a service game that hit 14 deuces and lasted 30 minutes. The service game lasted five minutes longer than the entire third set.
Fellow Australian Jordan Thompson also exited the tournament on day one, falling to Moldovan Radu Albot 2-6, 4-6, 1-6.
In difficult conditions, Thompson hit 44 unforced errors, over double that of his lower ranked opponent.

Three Australians will be in action on day two of Roland Garros.
In the third match on Court 14, Aussie John Millman will take on 27th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in what will be his fourth meeting with the Spaniard.
James Duckworth will come up against American Tommy Paul for the pairs first meeting, in the second match of the day on Court 4.
Aussie qualifier Aleksandar Vukic will make his grand slam debut, first up on Court 5 against fellow qualifier Pedro Martinez. It will be the first meeting between the pair.
