This week on The First Serve, host Brett Phillips recapped the latest from Roland Garros after a big first week of competition, which also saw the return to Grand Slam tennis of Aussie Daria Gavrilova who joined the show from quarantine in Perth having flown back to Australia from Paris. Gavrilova talked about her tennis comeback defeating the seeded Dayana Yastremska in the first round.
“From all the training I had done, I think that I knew that I was playing well. I was feeling good, I was hitting the ball well, but I just didn’t know how I was hitting the ball compared to other girls. Even though I played that challenger to be fair it wasn’t the level that I expected, I didn’t play girls that were ranked that high, so I was like ok I still kind of don’t know. Coming to the French I had a few training sessions with the top players, ok yer I can do this, playing pretty good tennis and after winning that I was like, I didn’t lose too much in a year” Gavrilova said.
Also on the show this week, Brett chatted with Damien Saunder from Bendigo Tennis Club in Victoria about the need to establish a tennis club at the $6 million dollar Fosterville Gold Tennis Center.
