Poland's Iga Świątek has claimed the Roland Garros title, defeating 4th seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 24 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The 19 year old became just the fourth teenage woman to win the French Open without dropping a set all tournament, dropping just 28 games en route to claiming the title. This is the fewest games lost en route to a Roland Garros title since Steffi Graf's 20 in 1988. She also became the first Polish man or woman to win a singles major in tennis history.
Swiatek admittedly said post match that she felt she was playing well enough to win a slam but it took a change in mindset to prevail:
"After pre-season and the Covid break, I was playing so well I thought actually I may win a Slam now because the top players weren't there and it was an opportunity for underdogs. But when I started the US swing I realised maybe this is not the best way to approach tournaments and my expectations were too high. So right now I just focused on playing tennis and I made it. It's amazing what a proper mindset can do," Swiatek said.
The 19 year old is the youngest Roland Garros champion since Monica Seles in 1992 and the first teenager to win the tournament since Iva Majoli in 1997.
Swiatek came into the tournament ranked 54 in the WTA rankings and is only the second unseeded woman in the Open Era to win the French Open, after Jelena Ostapenko in 2017. She is the lowest ranked woman to win the French Open since 1975 and will skyrocket to a career high 17 in the rankings when they update officially on Monday.
As stars continue to emerge on the WTA circuit, Swiatek became the ninth first-time grand slam singles champion in the last 14 women's majors, following from Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Bianca Andreescu and Sofia Kenin.
