Jordan Thompson secured a first round win over South African Lloyd Harris at the ATP 250 Atlanta Open this morning. In a match that went two and a half hours, Thommo prevailed 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 with ten aces, 77% first serve points won and saved 13/17 break points against his serve to register his 12th win from his last 18 singles matches played.
Unfortunately Alexei Popyrin couldn't muster a win going to down to a serving masterclass from American Steve Johnson 6-7, 3-6 despite 11 aces of his own, but threw in three double faults and a missed volley proved costly in the first set tie breaker. It was Popyrin's 7th loss in his last eight games.
Nick Kyrgios played his first match since bowing out of Wimbledon recently playing in the doubles with Jack Sock. The pair won through to the quarter finals with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
At Challenger level, Thanasi Kokkinakis returned to the winners list after three straight losses overcoming American Christian Harrison 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in the Lexington first round serving twelve aces, and saving seven of ten break points. In Poland, Aleksandar Vukic got his week off to a great start with a straight sets win over Argentine Guido Andreozzi 6-1, 6-4.
