The present and future of UTR and PTT Tour

Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) officially began the UTR Pro Tennis Tour on January 1, 2021. Since its inception, it has actively shaped the game of tennis for collegiate and lower-ranked professional players for over half a decade now. 

While the foundations of the UTR Pro Tennis Tour have always been to provide opportunities and incentives where they have traditionally lacked in professional tennis, the future of UTR and the UTR Pro Tennis Tour remains brighter than ever. 

Speaking exclusively to The First Serve, Senior Vice President at UTR Sports, Chase Hodges, a former Hall of Fame collegiate tennis coach with 15 national championships and 24 years of collegiate coaching expertise, illustrated the motivation and prospects of UTR, along with the steps being precisely taken to ensure the sustainability and growth of the UTR Pro Tennis Tour. 

The why behind the UTR Pro Tennis Tour has always been simple: equality for tennis players who get left behind in the difficult climate of professional tennis. 

"Our core goal is to ensure that no talented tennis player's career stalls simply because the infrastructure to support them does not exist," said Hodges. 

"The UTR rating system provides the most accurate, universal measure of a player's level, and the UTR Pro Tennis Tour is built on that foundation to give emerging professionals a reliable, accessible competitive pathway."

The specific motivations further ensure a foundation steeped in integrity, purpose, and implementation across the board at UTR.

"We are focused on three priorities: expanding competitive opportunities globally, increasing the financial rewards that make a professional tennis pursuit more viable, and strengthening event quality through better technology, officiating, and coaching," Hodges explained. 

"As other federations and providers have reduced their pro tennis investment, UTR Sports is committed to investing more than ever into our emerging professional pathway. Our goal is to continue our mission and success over the past five years to build the support that collegiate and professional tennis development has been missing." 

Furthermore, the specific demographic of collegiate and lower-ranked professional players has always been key to the UTR Pro Tennis Tour, and something UTR as an organisation is exceptionally proud of. Building up this demographic for current opportunities, yet also further future development and success, is part of what makes the UTR Pro Tennis tour so special and unique. 

"The UTR Pro Tennis Tour serves players ranked 200 to 4,000 in the UTR UTR Pro Tennis Tour Rankings, a range that covers serious collegiate competitors and emerging professionals who are not yet able to financially sustain themselves on the traditional ATP or WTA circuits," Hodges highlighted. 

"Players who started their professional tennis journey on the UTR Pro Tennis Tour now compete at the highest levels of tennis, and at the 2024 US Open, 39 UTR Pro Tennis Tour alumni competed in the main draw. The UTR Pro Tennis Tour is designed to be a genuine developmental pathway, not a permanent destination.

"Our hope is that players outgrow us, and that when they do, it is because the UTR Pro Tennis Tour gave them the match volume, prize money, and competitive experience to make that progression."

The financial element of the UTR Pro Tennis Tour also lies at the core of UTR's purpose and plan for the future, as the significant financial rewards and incentives sustain consistent play and participation. 

"We continue to be committed to deepening the financial case for UTR Pro Tennis Tour play. The Tour Card program features three tiers of benefits and rewards players for both their commitment and performance, including a year-long points race with $300,000 available to the top 100 players in each gender," Hodges explained. 

"As a sign of our commitment, we increased our bonus pool significantly this year. The Tour Card also unlocks $2K+ value in non-cash benefits, including an exclusive Global Privileges Premium travel benefits. Dunlop offers 40 per cent off retail pricing on tennis equipment, Power savings, and the new Fabletics VIP membership and gear for US players who complete at least two events. This program has more than doubled in value in the last 12 months."

Relationships with key sponsors and partners strengthen the financial model that maintains the UTR Pro Tennis Tour. Additional strategies are also scheduled to bolster financial incentives and further develop the tour. 

"Our financial model is built on technology licensing revenue from our rating and software platforms, strategic commercial partnerships, most notably our long-term partnership with Sportradar, as well as event fees and streaming through Amazon Prime Video," said Hodges. 

"We are continuously exploring additional sponsorship structures to grow the prize pool further, and players can expect continued expansion of benefits and product features as the tour scales."

As for the current climate surrounding the player experience and relationships with official governing bodies, UTR maintains a spirit of collaboration, always open to dialogue and discussion on how to develop and improve the climate of professional tennis for players. 

"The inequities at the lower levels of the professional game, insufficient prize money, lack of guaranteed matches, and the financial burden of travel are precisely the problems the UTR Pro Tennis Tour was created to address," specified Hodges. 

"We operate in a spirit of collaboration rather than competition with the established governing bodies. Our rules framework formally references ITF regulations, and we work alongside national federations across more than 30 countries.

"We are not in a position to speak to specific ongoing dialogue with the ATP or WTA at this time, but we believe the UTR Pro Tennis Tour's growth contributes constructively to the broader conversation about what professional tennis should look like for players on the collegiate and pro pathways. We remain open to deeper collaboration where players' interests are at the centre."

The future of the UTR Pro tennis Tour lies in sustained global expansion.

"Global expansion is central to our strategy, and we are building it deliberately," he said. 

"Over 450 events are being held in more than 30 countries, with more than 27,000 matches completed in 2025 to date. Recent expansions into India, Vietnam, Bali, France, Portugal, Poland, and Germany, through a hosting partnership with two-time Grand Slam champion Rohan Bopanna and his academy in Bengaluru, and into Scotland through a collaboration with Tennis Scotland that integrates UTR Pro Tennis Tour events directly into the existing Tennis Scotland Open Tour, reflect our approach well."

This future is rooted in strong relationships and collaboration with national bodies, organisations, facilities, staff, and players. 

"We embed the UTR Pro Tennis Tour within existing national structures, partnering with colleges, governing bodies, established academies, and proven facilities so that events are locally grounded and financially sustainable," Hodges continued. 

"We provide the staff, technology, prize money framework, logistics support, training programs, education, and streaming infrastructure. Our partners provide the on-the-ground relationships, facilities, and player pipelines. It is a model built for long-term mutual benefit, and we believe it is the right way to grow the game on a global scale."

It is evident that through the UTR Pro Tennis Tour, UTR is continually showing up for players who have been overlooked in the professional tennis sphere.

The future is exceptionally bright given the sustained purpose and infrastructure the UTR has built and maintains to continually support players and the very development of the game.
