The 2024 US Open quarter-finals are set in stone, manufacturing a handful of spicy matchups for tennis fans to appreciate.
Men's Singles Results:
[10] Alex de Minaur def. Jordan Thompson 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5
[1] Jannik Sinner def. [14] Tommy Paul 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1
[5] Daniil Medvedev def. Nuno Borges 6-0, 6-1, 6-3
[25] Jack Draper def. Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-1, 6-2
An Aussie derby was the main talking point across Tuesday's action, as two Sydney men exchanged gruelling rallies for a chance to book a priceless ticket to the quarter-finals.
It was de Minaur who raced out of the blocks and suffocated Thompson in the early stages, stepping into the baseline and dictating the flow to claim an unlikely bagel in the opening set.
Despite a mini-resurgence from Thompson and chances to drag the match into a deciding set, de Minaur's 55 points won on return of serve meant the world No.10 had the upper hand from minute one.
The 25-year-old now has the best chance to reach a maiden Grand Slam semi-final, avoiding Carlos Alcaraz to face 25th seed Jack Draper from Great Britain.
However, Draper will be no pushover, still yet to drop a set in the tournament and has failed to concede more than four games in one set - completely dominate in his victory over Tomas Machac.
Top seed Jannik Sinner featured in his first night session match on Arthur Ashe Stadium this event, holding his nerve in two gripping tiebreaks - both going the way of the Italian to silence the home crowd and pencil in an Australian Open final rematch against Daniil Medvedev.
“Tough match. It’s gonna be a lot of rallies," Sinner told Christopher Eubanks post-match. "Hopefully I’ll be ready physically. It’s gonna be a physical and mental match. I won in Australia. He won in Wimbledon... both in 5 sets. Hopefully it will be a good match. We’ll try to do our best on court. Hopefully you guys enjoy it and we’ll see how it goes.”
Medvedev, champion in New York three years ago, made light work of Nuno Borges in straight sets to remind the rest of the field that he is a genuine threat to the crown.
Women's Singles Results:
[1] Iga Światek def. [16] Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-1
Karolína Muchová def. [5] Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-3
[6] Jessica Pegula def. [18] Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-2
[22] Beatriz Haddad Maia def. Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 3-6, 6-3
Heavy underdog Liudmila Samsonova held her own in the first set before the pressure was too great to manage, dropping serve at 4-5 to hand a priceless advantage to the world No.1.
From there, Światek's displayed near-flawless tennis to pull through in another straight sets triumph.
The Pole will be banking on her favourable 6-3 head-to-head record against her quarter-final opponent, Jessica Pegula, who is another competitor yet to drop a single set this tournament.
“We played here two years ago. Playing against Jessica it’s never easy. Pretty tricky game style," Światek admitted post-match. "You have to work low on your legs and be ready for long rallies but also some intense hitting. She’s a great player so for sure it’s gonna be a challenge.”
Before this year, Jasmine Paolini had never progressed past the second round of a major. In 2024, she has made the fourth round of every Slam, but her Flushing Meadows journey ended due to the brilliance of former world No.8 and French Open runner-up Karolína Muchová.
The Czech has been broken twice in her past three outings, including an impressive win against former US Open champion Naomi Osaka.
The moment of the day belonged to two-time US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki, turning back the clock as she covered the court what looked like 20 times over to win an astonishing 20-shot rally to save match point against eventual victor Beatriz Haddad Maia late in the third set.
Despite the defeat, a fourth round appearance means the 34-year-old is two places away from returning to the top-70 in the rankings.
