AMERICAN TALENT AIMS FOR NO.1 RANKING, TAKES DOWN SABALENKA

Promising talent Amanda Anisimova has revealed her intention to one day reach the summit of tennis and achieve the No.1 ranking and Grand Slam glory. The 22-year-old defeated two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-2 in the quarter-finals of Toronto - still yet to drop a set in the tournament as she prepares to face compatriot Emma Navarro in the last four. Anisimova burst onto the scene in 2019 when she became the youngest French Open semi-finalist since Nicole Vaidišová in 2006 at just 17 years of age. However, despite being earmarked as the next big thing, the former world No.21 took an indefinite break away from the game in May last year to cope with her mental health. "I've really been struggling with my mental health and burnout since the summer of 2022," she wrote last year. “It's become unbearable being at tennis tournaments. At this point, my priority is my mental well-being and taking a break for some time. I've worked as hard as I could to push through it." Now rediscovering her consistency and confidence on tour, Anisimova opened up about her objectives for the foreseeable future after taking down one of the world's top players.

"I still hopefully have many more years left in my career, and there are many goals that I have for myself that I want to accomplish throughout my career," said Anisimova via Toronto Press.

"A small one for this year was to break into the top 100, and I've already done that, so I'm really happy about that. It's just small steps in the right direction to hopefully achieve the things that I want to be able to achieve, like winning a Grand Slam and becoming No.1 one day. I hope that with all the training I do and staying healthy I can get to that point.” American tennis is in good hands on the women's side, as five players from the States reached the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time in history this week - without the presence of reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff.
