The 2026 ATP season will see a welcome change concerning extreme heat following a Board decision.

Adjustments are based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), which measures heat stress by combining temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover.

It will kick in for the first time during the Australian summer of tennis.

HEAD has partnered with the Kooyong Classic for 2026. HEAD will be on-site with all their latest products, including the launch of the new Revolt Pro 5.0. Visit the HEAD tents at the Kooyong Classic from 13-15th January to do a fit test on the new Revolt Pros.

Key provisions outlined by the ATP:

10-minute cooling break

  • Implemented when the temperature hits 30.1°C or higher during the first two sets of a best-of-three set singles match.

  • Either player can request a 10-minute cooling break after the second set, and it will apply to both players.

  • When activated, players may utilise cooling measures, hydrate, change clothing, shower, and receive coaching under the supervision of ATP medical staff.

Suspension of play

  • Play will be stopped when the WBGT exceeds 32.2°C

Player health and safety

  • The health and safety of the players is prioritised by providing a structured, medically supported approach to manage extreme heat, which will also protect spectators, officials, ball persons, and tournament staff.

It comes after several remonstrations from players following a sizzling tournament in Shanghai two months ago, with the Chinese city reaching humidity as high as 80 per cent.

"We can handle a certain amount of heat, because we're strong and mentally strong as well, but there is always a limit," former world No.4 Holger Rune said at the Masters 1000 event.

"It's also important to take care of your health. We need to survive."
