A long-serving Australian Open lead-in event gets underway next week, as a host of women undertake final preparations ahead of Melbourne.
The Hobart International – running under various names since 1994 – will be a WTA 250 event in 2025, with the main draw commencing Monday, January 6 and the final held on Saturday, January 11.
Emma Navarro lifted the title in 2024, but the American will look to defend her points at the WTA 500 Adelaide International this week.

Two Australians have been awarded wildcards into the event, with Daria Saville and Maya Joint making up the local contingent.
After a first-round qualifying loss in Brisbane, Saville will begin her Hobart campaign from the main draw against third-seed Amanda Anisimova.
Prior to the Australian summer, Saville’s 2024 season ended positively, returning from a foot injury suffered at the US Open to claim the second biggest title of her career in Carrara.
The 30-year-old Aussie will seek to surge back to a double-figure ranking (currently world No.108) ahead of her 10th Australian Open main draw.
After announcing herself to many Australians in Brisbane, Maya Joint will travel to Hobart to play the event for the first time.
The 18-year-old rising talent enjoyed a second WTA main draw win last week, overcoming compatriot Maddison Inglis 6-3, 6-4, before challenging world No.20 Victoria Azarenka in a tight three-set contest.
Joint – who recently left the University of Texas to pursue her pro career – will face Serbian Olga Danilović in the first-round.
Rest of the Field
With the event taking place the week before a Grand Slam and many women headed to the Adelaide WTA 500, world No.33 Dayana Yastremska enters Hobart as the top-seed.
Elise Mertens, Kiwi Lulu Sun, and former US Open champion Sloane Stephens will also headline the action in an opportunistic 32-player draw.
