AUSTRALIA LEARN DAVIS CUP OPPONENT AFTER 'UNBELIEVABLE' GAME PENALTY

Sensational scenes unfolded during Belgium and Chile's Davis Cup tie, with the South Americans receiving a game penalty after refusing to continue after Cristian Garín was clattered to the ground.

Lleyton Hewitt's Australia had a vested interest, given the winner would face them in the second-round of qualifying in September.

Belgium's Zizou Bergs sprinted to his bench after earning a crucial break to lead 6-5 and have the chance to serve for the tie, trying to use the home crowd to his advantage.

But that's when the chaos erupted, as Bergs accidentally bumped Garín to the floor, leaving the Chilean with a swollen right eye.

The Chile camp protested in anger, demanding that Bergs be defaulted from the match.

Instead, Bergs received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, with Garín copping three time violations as a result of refusing to restart proceedings.

With that, Chile were docked a game and handed Belgium the match and the tie, progressing 3-1.

Fans jumped on social media to give their take.

"The most blatant default ever witnessed and not given," one X comment read.

Another person wrote, "bergs was grossly negligent here. The umpire made an awful decision by punishing Garín (i.e Chile) for Bergs' easily preventable error. You don't jump like that without first making sure the coast is clear."

Chile captain Nicolás Massú shared his disappointment after the match, revealing that no one from the Belgian camp were concerned about Garín's condition.

"One hour and a half later we still didn't receive an apology from anyone. Not a single person asked if Cristian is okay," he told the media.

Belgium will take on Australia after the Aussies comfortably dispatched Sweden 3-1 in Stockholm over the weekend.
