The quarter-final between Terence Atmane and Miomir Kecmanović at Mexico's Acapulco Open has ended with a point penalty.

Atmane, 24, was trailing his Serbian opponent 3-6, 3-5, when he walked over to the ball girl to quickly use his towel.

After already receiving a time violation warning, Atmane was docked a point for making Kecmanović wait to serve, which resulted in his exit from the tournament in rather bizarre scenes.

Listen to The First Serve Live every Monday at 8pm AEDT in its 18th year on the SEN Network/App, Australia's only dedicated weekly tennis program on commercial radio running through till the end of November.

The purpose of enforcing time violations is to ensure the speed of the match flows to eradicate a stop-start effect. In this case, Atmane failed to play to the speed of the server.

For Kecmanović, he will face fifth seed Flavio Cobolli for a place in the final of the ATP 500 event.

It has been a weird tournament in Acapulco, with the top four seeds crashing out before the quarter-final stage for the second consecutive year.

The First Serve Live returns weekly each Monday Night on the SEN Radio Network & SEN App.
