Australia’s Alex de Minaur will make his Olympics debut in Paris over the next fortnight in an attempt to claim a medal.

The 25-year-old has been battling to be fit ever since he was forced to withdraw from his Wimbledon quarter-final due to a cartilage tear in his hip.

Ahead of the tournament, de Minaur confirmed his eligibility.

“I have always wanted to be an Olympian and I am just so excited to represent the green and gold in Paris,” he said.

“Obviously last time round I got a little bit unlucky to not be able to play in Tokyo, but I’ve had my eyes set on Paris and I am super excited to now be officially part of this Team.”

“Representing Australia is always a pride and an honour and the Olympic Games is probably one of the highest accolades you can achieve. It is so special and of course you want to do your best because you’re not just playing for yourself, you’re playing for your team and your country.”

“I am really looking forward to just immersing myself in what it means to be an Olympian, I am excited see all the other sports, meeting some of my fellow athletes and teammates and making some new Aussie friends.”

Having reached a career-high of No.6 in the world rankings last Monday, the Sydneysider will be Australia’s main hope in the singles draw.
