Alex de Minaur is one step closer to securing back-to-back Nitto ATP Finals appearances after top 10 rival Jack Draper announced that his injury is worse than expected.

Draper, 23, will remain on the sidelines for the remainder of 2025 due to left arm bone bruising. He withdrew before his second round match at the US Open because of the same problem.

The news eliminates the world No.7 from the ATP Finals, which is an end-of-year tournament comprising the best eight performing men's players on Tour throughout the season (ATP rankings and Race to Turin rankings are calculated separately).

"Hi guys, an update from me… Unfortunately, the injury to my arm is something I have to rest and means I'll be sitting out the rest of 2025," the Brit confirmed in an Instagram post.

"It is very difficult for me to accept, as I was building some incredible momentum this year and playing some great stuff. However, I've been through this before, and I always come back stronger as I'm so motivated to fulfil my potential as a player.

"Huge thanks to everyone who backs me to do well and supports me on my journey. Can’t wait to get back out there and give it my all. See you soon!"

As a result, de Minaur is perfectly placed to become the first Australian to play in two consecutive ATP Finals since Lleyton Hewitt.

Currently ranked seventh in the race to Turin with 3,145 points, the 26-year-old is 75 points clear of Italy's Lorenzo Musetti, but more importantly, he possesses a healthy 440-point lead over 10th placed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who defeated the Sydneysider en route to the US Open semi-finals.

Andrey Rublev, who sits 11th in the race, has amassed 2,410 points so far.

In last year's edition, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament to take care of a niggling injury. The Serbian star has previously stated that Grand Slams are his priority, which could open the door further for de Minaur.

There are two Masters 1000 events remaining in the calendar scheduled for October (Shanghai and Paris), with four ATP 500 tournaments available to enter (Tokyo, Beijing, Vienna, Basel).

If required, two 250-tier events in Athens and Metz will be hosted in the first week of November in the lead-up to the ATP Finals.
