Emotions ran high for former world No.2 Paula Badosa at the Berlin Open after she annihilated her racquet as a result of an early retirement.

Badosa was outplayed 1-6 in the first set against Wang Xinyu, who defeated Coco Gauff in the previous round, before deciding to forfeit the match just three points into the second set of her quarter-final.

It wasn't until after the Spanish star shook hands with her opponent and the chair umpire that she vented her anger at her racquet by smashing it into the ground four times.

Shortly after the match, Badosa wrote a heartbreaking five-word post on X.

In a separate post, she wrote "Os quiero" with a love heart emoji, translating to "I love you" in response to all of the supportive messages.

The 27-year-old has now retired mid-match twice in 2025, while also exiting the Miami Open via a walkover.

She has had to deal with multiple back injuries dating back to 2023, including a stress fracture.

Last month, the former Indian Wells winner conceded that her chronic back issue will likely lead to an early retirement from the sport.

"In the end, I'm still 27. If they tell me to stop at 30 or 32, then fine, but if I can handle it somehow, then I'll try," she said.

It remains unclear whether she will be ready in time for Wimbledon, which starts June 30.
