Australian qualifier Tristan Schoolkate has achieved his first-ever top 50 win at the Toronto Masters, propelling him into new territory inside the top 100.

Schoolkate didn't face a single break point on serve against Brazilian teenager João Fonseca, who is being tipped as a future star of the sport, to secure a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory on Centre Court.

"I'm very happy with the result today. I thought I played a good match and made it pretty tricky for João," the 24-year-old said post-match.

"He's a very established player, and he's so young. Even when his age (18) flashed up on the board, I was still a bit like, 'Here we go'.

"I'm just happy with the way I played and look forward to the next one."

The Western Australian moves up five places in the live ATP rankings to No.98, setting a new career-high.

"It's obviously a goal of mine to be in the top 100 and playing these tournaments week in, week out," Schoolkate shared. "It's where you want to be, and if it's not this week, and it’s not next week, then I'll keep pushing hard, and I'm sure it'll be in one of the weeks to come."

He is one of seven Aussies primed to compete in the second round, which hasn't occurred in 37 years.

Aleksandar Vukic toppled Pedro Martínez 7-5, 6-3, and Christopher O'Connell was in no mood to play a marathon as he took care of Tseng Chun-hsin 6-1, 6-2.

Alex de Minaur, Alexei Popyrin, Adam Walton and James Duckworth are the other names flying the Australian flag in Canada.

Popyrin, who arrives as the 18th seed, is the defending champion after winning Montreal last year to become the first Aussie to clinch a Masters crown since Lleyton Hewitt.
