'SHOCKED' 16-YEAR-OLD AUSSIE BEATS WORLD NO.37 IN ADELAIDE BOILOVER

16-year-old Emerson Jones has claimed the biggest win of her career by defeating world No.37 Xinyu Wang in the opening round of the Adelaide International.

Jones held her nerve in the key moments and produced clean hitting to close out an emphatic 6-4 6-0 victory.

"I'm actually pretty surprised, a bit shocked," Jones said in her on-court interview.

"I didn't even think I'd get a wildcard into this tournament, so winning a round is pretty special.

"Sometimes I do get a bit ahead of myself, [but] today I was just trying to focus on each point and not get too ahead of myself."

Ranked No.371 in the WTA rankings, the Australian talent received a wildcard into the Adelaide 500 main draw.

Last year was a breakout year for Jones, reaching two Junior Grand Slam finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, as well as winning the ITF World Junior Finals and becoming the first Aussie female since Jelena Dokic in 1998 to become Junior No.1.

Last month at the Newcombe Awards, she shared the Female Junior Athlete of the Year with 18-year-old Maya Joint.

Jones will next face Australia's Olivia Gadecki or No.3 seed Daria Kasatkina in the round of 16.
