AUSTRALIAN OPEN QUALIFING - AUSSIE PREVIEW

Australian Open qualifying officially gets underway tomorrow at Melbourne Park as 25 Aussies will be looking to punch their ticket toward the main draw.

Of those Australians, 17 have been granted wildcards into the qualifying draw due to commencing 2023 with a lower ranking compared to the rest of the field.

Below is the entry list for the players who will be partaking on home soil:

Key:

WC = Wildcard

PR = Protected Ranking

Australian entrants - Men’s Singles:

- John Millman (207) - PR

- Li Tu (255)

- Dane Sweeny (256) - WC

- Tristan Schoolkate (260) - WC

- Philip Sekulic (277) - WC

- Omar Jasika (342) - WC

- Jeremy Jin (718) - WC

- Edward Winter (749) - WC

- Pavle Marinkov (1103) - WC

- Hayden Jones (1309) - WC

The main headline revolves around John Millman’s final hurrah after announcing his retirement from tennis after this month’s Australian Open. Failing to gain a wildcard into the main draw, the 34-year-old will aim to add more memories to a fantastic career, including a stunning win against Roger Federer at the fourth round of the 2018 US Open.

Speaking to Channel Nine in Brisbane after communicating his desire to hang up the racquet, Millman still remains adamant that he has what it takes to compete.

“I still feel as though my level is top-100 tennis. It’s just week-in, week-out I wasn’t able to do that with my body,” he said.

Philip Sekulic, 20, has recently been touted with a bright future thanks to his rise inside the top 300 and some priceless exposure to big tournaments at the end of last season, including a round of 16 appearance against world number 25 Lorenzo Musetti at the Chengdu Open and a first round showing to face world number 46 Lorenzo Sonego at the Shanghai Masters.

Having his sights set on ending a seven-year drought, 26-year-old Omar Jasika hopes to enter the Australian Open main draw for the first time since 2017 when he lost to former world number 3 David Ferrer.

Making waves during qualifying at Melbourne Park in 2022, Edward Winter, 19, defeated number 4 seed and former Australian Open quarter-finalist Gilles Simon for the biggest win of his young career.

Keep an eye on two exciting players ranked outside the top 1100 in Hayden Jones and Pavle Marinkov, with the latter defeating world number 119 Luca Nardi in straight sets at the Canberra Challenger event last week.

Australian entrants - Women’s Singles:

- Arina Rodionova (114)

- Astra Sharma (124)

- Storm Hunter (172)

- Priscilla Hon (206)

- Destanee Aiava (212)

- Ivana Popovic (665) - WC

- Maya Joint (737) - WC

- Emerson Jones (792) - WC

Two victories at the Brisbane International to commence the 2024 season has been nothing but deserved for Arina Rodionova, who won 78 games and seven ITF titles last year to achieve a career-high ranking of 113. Despite not being enough to be offered a wildcard, the 34-year-old is peaking at just the right time ahead of the first major of the year.

Storm Hunter, Astra Sharma, and Priscilla Hon are arguably the biggest chance to survive the qualifying rounds from an Australian perspective, given their experience on the tour and Grand Slam experience in the qualifiers.

Aside from Taylah Preston, Perth-born teenager Talia Gibson impressed last year with her results, picking up two ITF titles and stringing together some positive wins to build her confidence.

Known best for her incredible journey to the third round of the Australian Open two years ago, Maddison Inglis is a player who always seems to produce her best tennis down under and may well cause a surprise during qualifying.

Three debutants will step onto the grand slam qualifying scene with Melisa Ercan, Maya Joint, and Emerson Jones looking to make a name for themselves and take advantage of an incredible opportunity.

The only all-Australian matchup for the first round of qualifying sees Hon and Jones forced to do battle for a place in the second round up for grabs.
