AUSTRALIANS ENJOY SUCCESSFUL DOUBLES DAY AMID RAIN INTERRUPTIONS

Australian doubles players enjoyed success at Melbourne Park amid multiple rain interruptions, which led to a stop-start day.

Only three pairs featuring Australians took to the court on Wednesday, and the trio were victorious, with wildcards Tristan Schoolkate and Adam Walton along with Marc Polmans and Matthew Romios, both recording wins over more favoured opponents, while John Peers fought out a tough win alongside Jamie Murray.

Murray and Peers went into their match with Borna Gojo and Miomir Kecmanović as the heavy favourites and dominated through the first set to take a 5-1 lead. Although Murray failed to close out the set, the pair managed to consolidate their advantage as they eventually served out the set 6-3.

Neither team had a look at a break-point in the second set, but two double faults and a missed volley in the tiebreak by Murray allowed Gojo and Kecmanović back into the match.

The third went on serve until 4-3 when Murray, who had been the weaker player through the match, hit some inspired winners to secure the break before Peers comfortably served out the match.

Polmans and Romios were moved onto Margaret Court Arena at short notice, adjusting well to take the first set in a tiebreak against Arthur Rinderknech and Manuel Guinard.

The French pair then took the second set before the Aussies closed out the third to give Romios a win in his first Grand Slam match.

Schoolkate and Walton came up against the favoured pair of Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti to produce a dominant performance, dispatching the pair 6-2 7-6(3).

"I don’t think we started particularly well," said Bhambri. "The energy wasn’t great and it’s always tough when you’re playing two local boys with the crowd behind them, but we definitely didn’t do ourselves any favours."

Tomorrow will see several Aussies in doubles action, with the pair of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis sure to take most of the headlines as they open their campaign against Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth on John Cain Arena.
