The draw has been released for the ATP and WTA 500 events in Washington, but a tournament blunder involves Australia's Maya Joint.

An American flag was visible next to Joint's name despite the 19-year-old switching allegiance to Australia.

Although she was born in Michigan and attended college in Texas, Joint became an Australian citizen in 2023 during the time she relocated to train at Tennis Australia's National Academy.

She was born to an Australian father and a German mother.

Washington Open organisers are yet to release a statement surrounding the controversy, but The First Serve can confirm that it's an error.

In February, the Abu Dhabi draw ceremony mistakingly placed a Spanish flag next to Daria Kasatkina's name when she was still representing Russia, forcing the tournament to apologise as they cited an "administrative mistake".

The event in Washington, known as the Mubadala Citi DC Open, has paired Joint against former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in the first round.

At the start of the week, Joint achieved a career-high ranking of world No.37 after capturing the Eastbourne title on grass.

The Washington Open takes place from July 21-27.
