Alex de Minaur has clinched a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Zsombor Piros to give Australia a 1-0 lead over Hungary in their Davis Cup qualifier at Ken Rosewall Arena.
"I can't tell you how good it feels to play in front of a home crowd, on my home court. Very happy I was able to get the first win," de Minaur said.
The win is de Minaur's sixth for Australia in his last seven singles rubbers, improving his Davis Cup record to 6-4.
"It's special to wear the green and gold in front of legends of the sport, with the history, culture and tradition the Australian Davis Cup team has," de Minaur said.
The opening set was a tight one, with Piros - who is ranked more than 200 spots lower than de Minaur - saving multiple break points to extend the set. But a late weak service game off the Hungarian's racquet saw de Minaur trounce and claim the set 7-5.
The Aussie blazed away to take the second set 6-2, clinching the opening point for Australia.
In the second rubber of the tie, Thanasi Kokkinakis will come up against Marton Fucsovics.
"I am very happy I was able to get the first win and low let's all cheer really hard for Thanasi. He's got a tough one and let's get him over the line," de Minaur said.
