Australian Matthew Ebden has booked his place in the final round of Australian Open qualifying with a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over highly rated teenager Dominic Stricker.
Ebden slammed down 12 aces and won 84% of points on his first serve in a brilliant serving display on Court 7.
”It’s nice to be playing well at the start of the year and I’m feeling really fresh,” Ebden told Tennis Australia following his win.
The Aussie will now face Slovak Norbert Gombos in a bid to reach his ninth Australian Open main draw.
Ebden joins Kimberly Birrell in the final round of qualifying as the only two Aussies to reach that stage.
Edward Winter, Jaimee Fourlis, Arina Rodionova, Lizette Cabrera, Seone Mendez and Zoe Hives all suffered second round defeats at Melbourne Park on Thursday.
