Although the Aussies are out of the men’s and women’s doubles draws, they are enjoying great success in mixed doubles with Olivia Gadecki and John Peers as well as Ellen Perez (alongside German Kevin Krawietz) joining Kim Birrell and J.P. Smith in the quarter-finals.
Peers and Gadecki dominated the fancied team of Marcelo Arevalo, who is world No.1 in men’s doubles and multi-Grand Slam winner, Timea Babos. Peers was able to effectively neutralise the power of Arevalo throughout the encounter, while Gadecki pulled off some stunning shots at crucial moments to secure the 6-4 6-4 win.
"We played extremely well," said Gadecki. "They are a tough team and to win in straight sets is quite impressive. I just had so much fun out there and we just said, keep showing up and keep enjoying it and magical things can happen."
Perez and Krawietz had a comfortable win over Priscilla Hon and Alex Bolt 7-5 6-4, with Perez comfortably handling both Bolt and Hon on return throughout the match. Krawietz, also through to the men’s doubles quarter-finals, played a steady hand throughout the contest, dominating play with his powerful groundstrokes and deft volleys.
"It’s always tricky to play against a righty and a lefty as it’s always tricky to get a good rhythm on return," said Krawietz. "Having a lefty on my side is good. I think it’s a good partnership."
Perez and Krawietz will meet Birrell and Smith in the last-eight, as Peers and Gadecki prepare to play Shuai Zhang and Rohan Bopanna.
