A fairytale run has come to an end for Australia's Priscilla Hon at the US Open after bowing out in the third round.

The 27-year-old was one win shy of cracking into the top 100 live rankings for the first time before stepping out on court, but fell short 5-7, 3-6 to American Ann Li.

Despite starting slow out of the blocks, Hon overturned a 0-3 deficit in the first set to claw her way back at 5-5, only to hand her opponent the next two games.

The following set saw the Queenslander unable to capitalise on an early break, as she conceded five of the next six games to exit Flushing Meadows.

In what was her maiden third round singles appearance at a Grand Slam event, Hon, who qualified without dropping a set, will walk away with A$363,000 in prize money.

After Hon's first round win over Leolia Jeanjean, she shared the devastating moment when her surgeon told her that she may never play professional tennis again, following a serious hip tear during the pandemic.

"I didn’t realise how bad it was. I initially did it and thought I had hurt my hamstring," she said.

"I went in thinking I'll be fine in a week or something, and then (the doctor) is like, 'I don't know how you have done this. I only see this happen in motorbike accidents.' And I'm like, 'What is this?’' He's like, 'I don't know if you'll be able to play professional tennis and be moving like (an athlete) again'.

"I was crying, and I don't know if I should be saying this, but I went straight to the alcohol shop, because I'm like, 'What just happened?'. He (said), 'If you ever do this again, you are probably done, like, you cannot play ever again.' So that was tough."

In the men's doubles, Aussie John-Patrick Smith partnered Fernando Romboli to continue their brilliant 2025 campaign, brushing aside Alexander Bublik and Marcelo Demoliner 6-3, 6-2, while Olympic gold medalist John Peers won alongside American Jackson Withrow to prevail in a third-set super tiebreak.

Wimbledon finalists Rinky Hijikata and David Pel lost in two close tiebreaks to the tournament's No.9 seeds, and 16th seeds Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson suffered an upset defeat in straight sets.

On the women's side, former doubles No.1 Storm Hunter and partner Desirae Krawczyk destroyed Hailey Baptiste and Whitney Osuigwe 6-1, 6-1 without facing a break point on serve.
