Former world No.23 Dušan Lajović has experienced one of the worst days of his career, which included a swift transfer to the hospital after a freak accident.
The 35-year-old was representing Serbia in the first round of Davis Cup qualifying in Chile, as he suffered a straight sets loss to Tomás Barrios Vera in the first rubber.
Listen to The First Serve Live every Monday at 8pm AEDT in its 18th year on the SEN Network/App, Australia's only dedicated weekly tennis program on commercial radio running through till the end of November.
Playing in front of a hostile atmosphere in Santiago, Lajović was left unimpressed by the Chilean fans' behaviour during the match.
"It was tough to play here, where we knew we wouldn't receive fair play, but that’s the Davis Cup, and I don’t think the match was decided by that," Lajović said in the press conference.
"Obviously, we were prepared for some provocation. Most people came to enjoy the tennis, but there were a few in the stands who were disrespectful.
"One guy was telling me, 'You're bad, you're bad'. There's no need to talk to players. Obviously, it's not something you want to hear while you're competing on court."
His day went from bad to worse, with CLAY reporting that Lajović suffered an accident while heading to the locker room post-match, caused by colliding with a glass panel.
Lajović was rushed to the hospital to undergo medical examinations, and according to CLAY, the Serbian star suffered a cranial contusion, a cut to the oral mucosa and possible loosening of teeth.
CLAY added that although Lajović didn't lose consciousness, his condition was concerning.
