Stan Wawrinka's team confirm US Open wildcard request was lodged before rejection

After days of rumours and guesses, former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka requested a wildcard into the final Grand Slam of the year.
Wawrinka, 41, is playing his final season on Tour and previously received wildcards into the other three Grand Slams, where his best performance was the Australian Open, reaching the third round.
However, despite eight wildcards available, the Swiss star has been rejected by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) from entering the Flushing Meadows main draw.
The decision has been met with widespread criticism and anger, with many arguing that Wawrinka has been disrespected.

Tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg reached out to Wawrinka's team about the situation.
"Checked with his team to confirm, and: Yes, Stan did indeed request a main draw wildcard into US Open," he posted on X.

Wawrinka's coach, Magnus Norman, posted a heartfelt message on social media following the news of the wildcard rejection.
"We pushed to play one last Grand Slam at 41 years of age, but we just came up short," he said. "It sure hurts, but thanks for all the beautiful memories on and off the court together with you and the team in New York for the last 13 years."
Ranked 127th, the three-time major winner was eligible to enter US Open qualifying, but decided not to compete.
