TENNIS AUSTRALIA ISSUES WARNING TO PLAYERS COMPETING IN RUSSIA AFTER KOKKINAKIS SITUATION

Thanasi Kokkinakis has been placed on notice by Tennis Australia (TA) after competing in an exhibition tournament in Russia last year.

The 28-year-old entered the event from November 29 through to December 1, hosted in St. Petersburg.

Sponsored by Russian gas oil company Gazprom, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has financially sanctioned the corporation since April 2022.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Kokkinakis ignored advice from TA, deciding to take home a hefty pay cheque.

After his first-round win at the Australian Open last week, Kokkinakis hit back at Todd Woodbridge after suggesting to prioritise his schedule.

"That’s why he is trying to host every game show under the sun," the world No.72 said.

"We’re trying to make a living as much as he is."

A statement released by TA confirmed they continue to "advise athletes against competing in Russia".

"For several years, Tennis Australia has ... abided by federal government policy and recommendations in regard to Russia. This support and compliance continues," the statement read.

"We advise athletes against competing in Russia and are in ongoing discussions with DFAT to provide education to players about the potential ramifications for doing business in this area."

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the ATP and WTA have avoided displaying Russian and Belarusian flags for players representing those nationalities.
