World No.11 Holger Rune has had his 2025 season cut short in the cruellest way possible after an Achilles injury forced him into retirement mid-match.
Rune, who has been ranked as high as No.4, clawed back from 2-4 down to win four straight games in the first set against Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the Stockholm Open semi-finals.

But disaster eventuated in the fifth game of the following set when Rune called for the physio, telling him that he felt his Achilles tendon burst.
The camera switched focus to Rune's team, who were also in tears.
Naturally, the 22-year-old retired from the contest.
"It was not the way I wanted to win," Humbert said in his on-court interview.
"It's a shame, and I'm super disappointed for Holger. I hope he is going to be ok. I wish him a really speedy recovery. It was a great match, but I'm really sorry, I don't have to talk much.
"He was playing a little bit better than me. He was serving well. But yeah, I don't want to talk too much. I'm really sorry for Holger."
Rune's mother, Aneke, all but confirmed her son's expected lengthy stint on the sidelines.
"They say it's a torn Achilles tendon," she told Danish publication Ekstra Bladet.
“We haven't been scanned yet, but all the doctors here say they can see it with their naked eye. There is no doubt. It is a torn Achilles tendon. It is three to six months out."
Coming into the match, Rune was also battling a hamstring injury.
For Humbert, it will mark his 10th ATP Tour final as he awaits second seed Casper Ruud.
