Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz has poured cold water on suggestions that his shock coaching split will act as a distraction ahead of his Australian Open campaign, sharing that the decision was mutual.
Former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, who helped Alcaraz win all six of Alcaraz's Grand Slam titles, sensationally parted ways as coach last month.
In an interview with Spanish outlet Marca, Ferrero admitted he was "very hurt" about the situation, adding that it related to certain disagreements within Alcaraz's camp, with reports of Alcaraz's father having a pivotal say in the breakup.
"It's a chapter of life that had to end," Alcaraz told reporters at Melbourne Park. "I learned a lot with Carlos; probably thanks to him, I'm the player that I am right now. I'm really grateful for these seven years.
"We closed this chapter mutually. We are still friends, we have a good relationship, but we just decided to do it."
Asked by CLAY whether the split was driven by himself, or if there was influence within his inner circle, Alcaraz revealed: "It was something internal (with the team). Being such a professional team, there isn't a single move that we don't put on the table together."
Samuel López has stepped in to replicate Ferrero's role, as Alcaraz bids to complete the Career Slam at 22 years of age, having so far failed to reach the semi-finals in Melbourne.
"Everything is pretty much the same. I have the same team that I had last year, just one member missing. We didn't change any routine at all," Alcaraz explained.
"Obviously, the head coach has changed, and everyone has their own thoughts and way of working. I've been working with Samu for a full year. Whether he's second coach or first doesn't change the way he contributes his opinions and ideas, or his method of work. I know it very well."
Alcaraz begins his quest for a first Australian Open crown on Sunday night against Australia's Adam Walton.
