The 2028 grass court season will include a new ATP tournament in Italy, as the country continues to dominate the sport.

Already hosting the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals in November, along with the Rome Masters on clay before Roland-Garros, Milan's San Siro, which hosts famous football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan, with a capacity of over 75,000, is expected to be the destination.

"There's still time to decide where to play it," Italian federation president Angelo Binaghi said. "For climate reasons, it will probably be held in northern Italy."

Binaghi also added that he has heard word that the Madrid Open is open to exploring the option of practice courts inside Real Madrid's home stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu, as he left the door open for the San Siro: "For once, we wouldn't be the first to do it."

Listen to The First Serve Live every Monday at 8pm AEDT in its 18th year on the SEN Network/App, Australia's only dedicated weekly tennis program on commercial radio running through till the end of November.

The event is confirmed to be held each June.

From the beginning of June to the end of August each year, it's AC Milan and Inter Milan's off-season, meaning there will be no disruptions.

Italian world No.1 Jannik Sinner could be tempted to appear at another home tournament in the lead-up to Wimbledon, having also previously confessed his support for AC Milan.

It will be the first ATP event held on grass, after the WTA hosted a grass tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024.
