Wimbledon, a tournament famous for its rich tradition, will commence without the use of line judges for the first time in its 148-year history, beginning later this month.

The British Slam joins the Australian Open and US Open to welcome the adjustment, with Roland-Garros now the sole major to still rely on line calling without technology.

Although electronic line calling is near-flawless, players will still be allowed to request a video review.

All England Lawn Tennis Club chief executive Sally Bolton confirmed the new change.

"I think [the line judges] probably recognise that with the evolution of the technology and the consistent change across many of the other tournaments, that this is probably inevitable," she told the media.

"I think for many of them they had expected this change to come along, and for those that will be joining us for the Championships in the match assistant role, obviously they're delighted still to be part of delivering the Championships."

It marks the most drastic change implemented by the All England Club since the introduction of Hawk-Eye technology to review line calls in 2007.

"The time is right for us to move on," Bolton continued.

"We absolutely value the commitment that those line umpires have provided to the Championships over many years. We do have a significant number of them coming back in a new role as match assistants, so we're really pleased to have many of them still involved."

The main draw starts Monday June 30.
