The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has opted to undergo a rebrand, introducing a new logo and mission, but the changes have been met with disapproval.

Starting today, the WTA's logo will replace the classic purple logo with one that represents green, with the organising body's website confirming that the change was "designed by players, fans, and partners from around the world to elevate the impact of the WTA as a leader in sports and entertainment".

The new motto for WTA's mission is called 'Rally the World' in the hope of attracting new fans from around the globe.

"Forging new heroes, inspiring generations, and leaving a legacy through the power of tennis", the WTA wrote on their website

Portia Archer, the WTA CEO, commented on the new chapter with optimism and excitement.

"WTA has the widest global reach in women's sports," she said. "The competitive landscape of sports and entertainment, along with the increasing momentum in women's sports, creates the perfect moment for us to stand firm and take our leadership position alongside our amazing athletes and tournaments.

"This new and bold brand provides a distinctive and powerful voice to tell our stories and showcase WTA as the global brand for sports and entertainment where women's tennis shines.

"We invite our fans worldwide to join us as we unite the world and break even more barriers in the coming years."

However, fans on social media were left unimpressed by the makeover, with one X account posting: "The new WTA logo / theme is absolutely hideous. WTF were they thinking? That's what they've been teasing this whole time? I don't think it could be any worse if they tried! Always making bad decisions."

WTA Ventures CEO Marina Storti believes the WTA's bold move will "ignite excitement".

"The WTA has been on an unbelievable journey, redefining competition and showcasing the world’s greatest athletes," she stated.

"As we look ahead to a new era, our mindset is all about pushing forward, finding our edge, and elevating our impact as the home of women’s tennis. The project to reintroduce the WTA brand has been one of our biggest priorities since the launch of WTA Ventures, and we’re energised by the opportunity to ignite excitement for the biggest stars and stages of tennis."
