Melburnian Omar Jasika continues to build on his comeback to the tour in 2022, claiming another ITF singles title as he makes his way back up the rankings.
Jasika claimed his second ITF title of the year, defeating fellow Victorian Dayne Kelly 6-1, 7-6 (1) in an hour and 27 minutes in the final of the M15 in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
Jasika was relentless on serve, landing 86% of his first serve for the match and winning 73% of those points to hold Kelly at bay.
The win capped off a great week for Jasika who didn’t drop a set during the tournament and now moves to an impressive 25 wins and five losses for the season.
Since rejoining the tour in 2022, Jasika has climbed 863 spots from world No. 1433 to No. 570 in the space of two months.
Fellow Aussie Kelly enjoyed a great week in making the final, his first since October 2019 when he took out the title in Towoomba.
Kelly only dropped the one set in the lead-up to the final but was outplayed on the final day.
Australian tennis fans got an exciting glimpse into the future at the W15 in Chiang Rai as 17-year-old West Aussie Talia Gibson made the final of the singles and took out the doubles title with fellow teenager Catherine Aulia.
Gibson had to make her way through qualifying to get to the final, winning seven matches in a row and only dropping a singular set on her way to the deciding match.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Gibson, going down 0-6, 1-6 in under an hour against local Luksika Kumkhum.
It’s the first time that Gibson has made it past the second round at an ITF women’s event and is a shot of confidence moving forward.
A day earlier, Gibson teamed up with New South Wales native Aulia to earn victory in the doubles.
The two 17-year-olds marked a brilliant week together with their first ITF title, defeating Chinese pairing Fang Ying Xun and Yexin Ma 6-3, 7-6 (5) in an hour and 24 minutes.
The pair didn’t drop a set for the whole week.
