Alex de Minaur opens his Washington campaign with a win (The First Serve)

On a warm steamy day in Washington at the only combined mens and womens 500 tournament on tour, Aussie No.1 Alex de Minaur opened his campaign after an opening round bye, advancing in two contrasting sets to the Round of 16.

In a second meeting this year against China's Yunchaokete Bu, after defeating the world No.75 6-4, 6-4 in Miami back in March, the 26-year-old made it two from two with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory to set up a showdown with Czech 11th seed Jiri Lehecka.

Alexei Popyrin fell to former world No.54 Wu Yibing of China 5-7, 7-5, 3-6 to move to a 12-17 main draw record this season.

Whilst his ranking has maintained despite an underwhelming season for the large part, it is set to take a hit unless he can find the form that saw him win his first maiden 1000 title in Canada (Monteal) last year, which gets underway next week in Toronto where he is defending 1000 points.

Aleksandar Vukic went down to top seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 2-6.
