ALCARAZ EXPECTED TO SIT OUT OF DAVIS CUP TIE AGAINST AUSTRALIA

Spain's top-ranked player and four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz will skip the final Davis Cup tie in Group B against Australia, Spanish newspaper Marca reports.

Both nations are set to play a dead rubber tie after they secured qualification for November's Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, winning their opening two fixtures against France and Czechia.

According to Marca, Alcaraz opted to sit out of practice, deciding to prioritise a packed schedule in the coming weeks.

"Both of us have qualified. Let’s see," said Alcaraz after helping Spain conquer the French yesterday. "We have a day off tomorrow and I have to talk with (captain) David (Ferrer) about Sunday and see who’s going to play."

"The main goal is done and probably another player who hasn’t played yet is going to play on Sunday. It’s David’s decision but we’re going to enjoy these few days.”

Lleyton Hewitt's men lead the head-to-head 4-1 over the Spaniards in Davis Cup ties, with their sole defeat coming 24 years ago when the Aussies lost the Davis Cup final in Barcelona.

Spain and Australia will contest for top spot in Group B tonight at 7pm AEST live on Channel 9.
