US Open mixed doubles defending champions Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani are two wins away from silencing the tournament.

The Italian pair caused the first upset of the overhauled event, as they convincingly swept No.2 seeds Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina in the first round.

Errani and Vavassori remained on Louis Armstrong Stadium to complete another straight sets victory (4-1, 5-4(4)) over Andrey Rublev and Karolína Muchová, sealing their passage into the semi-finals.

In February, the tournament announced that the mixed doubles format would be remodelled to invite big-name singles players to participate, replacing the majority of doubles specialists.

"We are playing for all the doubles players that could not compete here. We try to do our best," Vavassori said alongside Errani in their on-court interview after defeating Fritz and Rybakina.

Top seeds Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula look the team to beat amid two comfortable victories against Carlos Alcaraz/Emma Raducanu (4-2, 4-2) and Daniil Medvedev/Mirra Andreeva (4-1, 4-1).

They will face Casper Ruud and Iga Świątek in the last four, while Vavassori and Errani are up against all-American duo Christian Harrison and Danielle Collins.

Recent Wimbledon mixed doubles winner Kateřina Siniaková was denied entry into the event after Jannik Sinner withdrew due to illness.

The winners are in line to split A$1.54 million.
