SEVEN AUSSIES REACH FINAL ROUND OF US OPEN QUALIFYING

Australia experienced its best result in US Open qualifying since 1994 with one round remaining, as seven Aussies remain alive. A record six women will be vying for a main draw berth at Flushing Meadows, including 16th seed Arina Rodionova - yet to drop a set in her opening two rounds to set up a clash against world No.182 Mananchaya Sawangkaew. Rodionova, 34, achieved her best singles result at the US Open back in 2017 when she made the second round. 20-year-old Western Australian talent Talia Gibson fended off one match point against American Hanna Chang to prevail 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10). There seem to be no signs of slowing down for world No.136 Maya Joint, as the 18-year-old defeated Iryna Shymanovich 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, now one match away from securing her Grand Slam main draw debut. The most impressive victory belonged to Priscilla Hon, requiring just 44 minutes as she breezed past 23rd seed Daria Snigur, dropping one game in the process. Destanee Aiava defeated world No.110 Japanese player Mai Hontama 6-3, 6-4, meaning the 24-year-old from Melbourne notched her biggest victory at Grand Slam level. Meanwhile, Kimberly Birrell edged one step closer to qualifying for the US Open for the first time in her career, proving too strong for Slovenian Veronika Erjavec in straight sets. Representing Australia on the men's side is Li Tu, achieving his best result at Grand Slam qualifying level as he beat Marco Trungelliti 7-5, 7-5, setting up a tough clash against world No.130 Jesper de Jong. Astra Sharma, Olivia Gadecki, Alex Bolt and Marc Polmans bundled out of qualifying at the second round phase.
