Australian legend Samantha Stosur has been recognised as one of the most accomplished players in Billie Jean King Cup history during a presentation in Málaga.
Career-high rankings of world No.4 in singles and world No.8 in doubles added with a memorable Grand Slam title at the US Open speak volumes about her legacy.
Yet it was her performances and heroics during the Billie Jean King Cup that showed her true character, playing 34 ties across a 19-year career.
The three-time Newcombe medalist was presented with a Commitment Award before Australia’s tie against Slovakia on Sunday, an honour which recognises tremendous dedication and application.
"Talk about an honour, yeah, it’s a real honour,” said an overwhelmed Stosur.
"I didn’t win all my matches by any means, but I know I gave it my best shot every single time and that’s something that I’m very, very proud of."
The 40-year-old won a total of 29 matches at the Billie Jean King Cup, who still holds the record for the most wins by an Australian in the competition’s history.
"I certainly wasn’t expecting anything. But to be recognised for all those years, being in this team and playing the green and gold is special," said Stosur, who also built an impeccable 10-1 record in Billie Jean King Cup doubles matches.
"I always did it with pride and tried to give every single time I got the opportunity to step out on the court, everything I had."
Unfortunately, Stosur’s maiden Billie Jean King Cup Finals event as team captain ended bitterly as Australia suffered a 2-0 defeat in the quarter-finals.
