THOMPSON WITHDRAWS FROM MADRID SINGLES, BUT ONE AUSSIE EARNS LIFELINE

Another last-minute withdrawal has ended Jordan Thompson's Madrid Masters 1000 singles campaign before it even started.

As was the case in Barcelona last week, the world No.40 opted not to step on court against Spain's Roberto Carballés Baena, who also pulled out of his home event.

Last week, Thompson told The First Serve that he had suffered an adductor injury.

The 31-year-old was one game away from progressing to the second-round of doubles alongside America's Sebastian Korda in Barcelona before retiring.

With the doubles draw for Madrid still to be released, it is unknown whether Thompson will feature.

Despite falling short in a tough three-set battle against experienced clay court player Fabio Fognini (6-4 5-7 7-5), Rinky Hijikata is included in the main draw as a Lucky Loser.

The 24-year-old Aussie was seeded fifth in qualifying and will have the chance to make the round of 64 when he tackles a challenging assignment in big-serving giant Reilly Opelka, with the winner to face 24th seed Karen Khachanov.

In other results, Kimberly Birrell couldn't capitalise on a one-set advantage against Peyton Stearns, suffering a 5-7 6-3 6-4 defeat. But teenage talent Maya Joint sealed her passage to the Madrid WTA 1000 main draw as she swept aside Jil Teichmann 7-6(2) 6-1 in 99 minutes.
