What to make of a big home loss; Aussies fail to qualify for BJK CUP Finals

(Getty Images - Team GB came and conquered)

For the second year running, Sam Stosur's team won't feature in the world's best eight teams in September's Billie Jean King Cup Finals, after Great Britain crushed Australia in their qualifier in Melbourne.

Trailing 0-2 coming into today's cut throat doubles encounter, Australia, led by Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez, couldn't rally to keep the tie alive, taken down by Harriet Dart (after her big singles win on Day 1) and Jodie Burrage 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the result and another trip to Shenzhen in September, where they made the semi-finals in 2025.

17-year-old Emerson Jones, called into the squad to replace the injured Maya Joint, was given an opportunity in the dead rubber and made a winning debut, defeating Katie Swan 7-5, 6-3.

The drought for Australia winning the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup) extends into its 52nd year, but not getting past the qualifying stage would be of great disappointment to Sam and the team in back-to-back years.

Particularly considering that GB didn't have their top four singles players to choose from (all in the top 100) and that the Australian team, certainly on paper and with the home advantage, were set up to get the job done and get back into the world's top eight teams.

Full credit to Great Britain; they played some outstanding tennis, and the Aussies didn't execute to the best of their abilities.

WHERE TO NOW FOR THE AUSSIES

Like in 2025, Australia are back in the playoffs to be held in November (details TBC) to try and get to this April qualifying stage again.

Whilst there could be some more short-term pain to come, the long-term prospects could be promising if the youth keep projecting upwards.

You would like to hope that Maya Joint, Talia Gibson and Emerson Jones are the long-term singles options, balancing that with the task of the now and getting back to the BJK Cup Finals in 2027 and beyond.

A lot of tennis to be played between now and November's playoffs, and where the experienced trio of Kim Birrell (3-6 singles record), Ajla Tomljanovic (7-9 singles record), and Daria Kasatkina (and whether she can become eligible to play for AUS) sit in the mix. Add in Storm Hunter, whose 6-2 singles record stands for Australia, and if she can spike back towards the top 100 this year, as is her desire, then perhaps she becomes the better singles option in the shorter term.

THE CAPTAIN

Three years in the captain's seat for Sam Stosur - QF's in 2024 and missing the Finals in 2025 and 2026 after taking the reigns from Alicia Molik (who guided Australia to two Finals in 2019 and 2022) in her 10-year stint.

The captain's role is a tough one to assess. You are not the players' direct coach; you have the players with you for a few days in camp leading into a tie. It can be more ceremonial in a lot of ways, as someone who can bring their great experience at crucial moments, where you might be able to impart something special on the players on the court with you.

Sam, by nature, is clearly a more reserved personality than a Lleyton Hewitt, for example. She won the role because of her playing achievements as a Grand Slam champion, but does that make her the best choice as captain to inspire the troops in team competition? Does she have that presence?

Anne Keothavong has led her British team since 2017 and has a 22-9 overall win-loss record as captain, and whatever team she has at her disposal, they have punched above their weight more often than not. Anne didn't have the same pedigree as a player as Sam did, but as a captain, she has found a way to bring the best out in her team.

This is not an attempt to dismiss Sam as the best option as captain (if we keep missing the Finals for the next few years, her fate may be realised), but it is interesting times going forward with no certainty of returning to the Finals in the near future.

When Nicole Pratt (long-time Australian Billie Jean King Cup coach) took the reigns in Hobart in last November's playoffs with Stosur on maternity leave, one did ponder that set up, with the former World No.35 so connected to the players on tour all year round and her more extroverted personality to galvanise a group of players.

One thing is for certain, that Australia in team competition have got some challenges ahead with our BJK Cup and Davis Cup teams both failing to qualify two years in a row for the Finals, and that is a tough pill to swallow for a tennis nation that takes great pride in country success.

Tune into both teams reflecting on the result below.

A good background people remover ai can really improve busy photos.

It helps bring attention back to the main subject.

Super useful for travel and street shots.

Spent way too long on Poki last weekend — started with one puzzle game and ended up trying like five different ones. Everything loads right in the browser which is nice when you just want something quick without installing anything. The variety is honestly what keeps me coming back.
