WIMBLEDON DAY 3: THOMPSON TO FLY SOLO, BUT WILL HE EVEN PLAY?

What is it about Jordan Thompson doing it the hard way in five-setters at Wimbledon?

For the third consecutive tournament at the All England Club, the world No.44 climbed the tallest of mountains to overturn a two-set deficit, with Vít Kopřiva the latest victim on Monday.

It was an incredibly gutsy performance from a player who doesn't know the meaning of giving up. He perfectly displays that good old never-say-die Aussie spirit. Lleyton Hewitt sat in Thompson's box watching on proudly, as the latter pulled off Hewitt's classic 'Come on' celebration after surviving an absolute marathon.

The draw has now opened up for Thompson, thanks to Daniil Medvedev's shock first-round exit, meaning the Aussie will face Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi for a spot in the round of 32.

But will Thompson even make it out on court?

He was visibly in pain throughout his recent match, which made the victory that much more impressive.

"I felt pretty sh*t, to be honest. I mean, it's tough. I haven’t practiced. I've been injured. I haven't played many tournaments. I haven't played at 100 per cent this year it feels like, so I can't say I'm enjoying it too much," he said after his win over Kopřiva.

Ever since the Australian summer, it's been nothing short of a miserable season for Thompson, who has battled plantar fasciitis and an adductor injury amongst other niggling issues.

If the 31-year-old were to withdraw before his scheduled second-round match against Bonzi, it wouldn't be the first time this year.

He withdrew just hours before his first-round match at the Barcelona Open, and in the following event in Rome, he handed Brandon Nakashima a walkover win.

Thompson has also retired mid-match on two occasions in 2025 at the Brisbane International and the Queen's Club Championships.

It is set to be the first-ever meeting between Thompson and Bonzi.

Despite a strong 17-Aussie field prior to Day 1 action, it was a disastrous opening day for the Australians at SW19, as seven of eight players were sent packing.
