Tennis icon Billie Jean King believes Wimbledon should scrap a 62-year rule to make the viewing experience appealing for fans and TV audiences.

In 1963, the tournament enforced a rule requiring players to wear 'predominantly white,' but it was adjusted in 1995 to allow colour to be worn, only if it isn't wider than one centimetre.

King, a former world No.1 and 12-time Slam champion in singles, has picked out the famous tradition as something that should change.

"There's a match that comes on, you sit down, and you look let's say it's television who's who?" King told The Telegraph.

"Tennis people say: 'Well, the mark is next to their name' [on the scoreboard to show who is serving].

"I shouldn't have to look at a mark, I shouldn't have to look at anything. I should know [who is who].

"My sport drives me nuts."

After his 2022 Wimbledon final defeat, Nick Kyrgios copped a fine for refusing to follow the dress code protocol during the trophy ceremony.

"Predominantly, you have to wear all white. I got fined about $16,000 for wearing a red hat and then my red Jordan's," he said.

King also added that tennis is missing out on "millions and millions" through merchandise sales, arguing that players should wear numbers and names on the back of their kits.

Wimbledon has already adopted one rule change for the 2025 tournament, deciding to replace line judges with electronic line calling.
