Jordan Thompson became the second Australian seed to fall early in the tournament, suffering a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Portugal’s Nuno Borges.
Following Alexei Popyrin's straight sets defeat on Tuesday, it leaves Alex de Minaur as our the sole remaining Aussie seed in the men's or women's draw.
27th seeded Thompson came into the match seeking to reach the Australian Open third round for the first time, but was ultimately unable to match the quality of his opponent.
The Aussie struggled from the outset, accumulating errors off both wings and battling with the Borges serve.
“[I] was getting outplayed, to be honest,” Thompson told the media.
“I just found it really tough to make inroads on his serve today, and his serve plus one was high-level.”

Thompson – who gave full credit to his opponent’s performance – was most frustrated with the injury that eventuated late in the third set.
“It was fine until probably 4-3…I did something to the other side of my foot.
“That's the most disappointing part…if he'd have beaten me 2, 3, 3, I walk away with a healthy body, I'd be happier.
“I was getting outplayed before that…but I barely won a point after I hurt the foot.”
Thompson suggested that he will withdraw from doubles where the world No.3 is set to play with Canada’s Vasek Pospisil.
"I don't want to play again, don't want to be on my feet until it's back to 100%."
Thompson is next scheduled to play Australia’s Davis Cup qualifier against Sweden at the end of the month, where he was named alongside Alex de Minaur, Nick Kyrgios, and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
